The gardens at Plumber are a great delight in the Summer months - but you not only have the gardens, there are
National Trust Houses,
beautiful villages and glorious walks to enjoy.
Plumber Manor, one of the finest country house hotels in Dorset, is the only hotel in the UK that is still owned, and now run as country house hotel, by the same family that built it in the early 1600s. There's no pretence here. You're guests of one of the oldest families in Dorset, whose roots can be traced back to William the Conqueror, and they'll really look after you.
Plumber Manor, the archetypal Dorset country hotel, is a fine Jacobean country house, located in the heart of Thomas Hardy's ‘vale of little dairies', one of the most beautiful parts of Dorset. It's so ‘far from the madding crowd', you could be excused for believing time is at a standstill and that Plumber Manor is the natural order of things.
Here’s what Matthew Norman’s restaurant review in The Guardian, including his comments on Plumber Manor’s ‘unwitting part’ in the 2008 US presidential election.
Plumber is halfway between London and Cornwall and makes a lovely break in the journey west, especially for families looking for a family hotel in Dorset or for a hotel near Longleat. We are also conveniently located for all the major independent schools in Dorset and Wiltshire, as well as being only half an hour from Poole for those travelling to France or the Channel Islands and the obvious choice for a hotel near Henstridge Airfield.
The hotel accommodation in this fine Jacobean manor house hotel, in fact more home than hotel, comprises 16 lovely rooms and one of the finest restaurants in Dorset; the atmosphere is relaxed and informal without a trace of pomposity. The impressive gallery upstairs, hung with huge family portraits, is typical of fine Jacobean houses of the period. There’s also a portrait of Charles I, which he personally presented to his mistress who was a member of the family. In winter, guests really enjoy sitting in the warm glow of the wide, open fires, often lost in reverie, staring at the flickering flames.
It’s easy to appreciate why this beautiful country hotel is the most idyllic exclusive use wedding venue.
Outside, there are the beautiful gardens where, in spring, the colours can be riotous and the birdsong symphonic! In summer, guests love to recline in deck chairs scattered about the well-manicured lawns, listening to the birds, the breeze in the trees, the trickling of the river; pure therapy. The quintessential English country house garden.
