Wellesley Wesley founded a small coaching establishment for aspiring Etonians at his home, Sandroyd House, in 1888, he can hardly have envisaged the extraordinary chain of events which was to ensue. In just seven short years the fast-growing school moved to a luxurious 40 acre site in Surrey complete with golf-course, squash courts and indoor heated swimming pool. Here it became a seat of learning for the sons of many of the leading families of the age. In 1939, alarmed at the prospect of imminent conflict, the Headmaster took a short lease on Rushmore House on the Wiltshire/Dorset borders which was later purchased from the Pitt-Rivers family.
